FAQ: Business Software By The Numbers

Researching business software options can seem like a daunting process, and you may have a thousand questions relating to ERP. I thought it would be helpful to share some of the answers for common questions. For instance, have you ever wondered:

  • “How long should ERP software implementation take?”
  • “What percentage of a company’s employees use business software?”
  • “Which deployment option is preferred by companies?”

Average software implementation time based on number of users:

  • 5-10 users = 5-6 months
  • 10-50 users = 6-8 months
  • 50+ users = 10.5+ months

Note: Average timeframe for ERP software selection is 6.5 months

More time for more users:The more users an organization has, the more time an organization should allow for implementation. Why? A larger user count typically necessitates more training, data, and specialized process requirements.

Software users as a percentage of total number of employees:

  • 1-50 employees = 50%
  • 50-500 employees = 30%
  • 500+ employees = 20%

Deployment preferences in distribution and wholesale industry:

  • Cloud = 43%
  • On-Premise = 11%
  • Uncertain/Undecided = 46%

Platform Decision:The current business trend finds more companies actively seeking Cloud ERP software than the traditional On-Premise ERP. The strong Cloud preference for wholesale distributors, in particular, reflects the demand for a real-time, integrated, comprehensive system.

Comparing Apples to Apples:Companies comparing software providers should be certain they are evaluating software vendors on a level playing field including “fixed cost” proposal for: Software Licenses, Training, Data Import, Consulting, Installation, Supplementary Modules/Integrations, Customer Modifications, and Annual/Monthly support and maintenance fees.

I hope these answers provide you with some clarity and guidance as you conduct your research. Please remember that I am always available if you need answers to any other business software questions.
